Welcome to Shavings & Awl
Who am I
I’m a guy who likes to make things, all sorts of things from all kinds of materials. A lot of the time I make things using wood, but not always. I enjoy working with tools and find that I have developed quite a passion for being a woodworker/maker and for writing blog posts or shooting videos of the projects that I build.
I cam very much an amateur and woodworking/making is still very much a hobby of mine and I try to do as much as I can in my spare time. I have had no formal training and am self taught or learn from studying the work of others.
I am dedicated to learning fundamental skills and then developing from there. I am a firm believer in the first principles method of learning as it has always worked well for me.
Shavings & Awl is a site that primarily hosts my Blog. My blog will cover all aspects of my time making, building, woodworking and DIY. I have found so much information in the blogs and websites of others and hope that one day someone will be able to say the same about my website. Whether it is for a project design, hand tool use, finishing technique or even a tool review that somebody finds useful, I hope to be able to have contributed something back into the wonderful world of woodworking.
In the near future I am hoping to expand the website to make it much easier to navigate and to present a much larger amount of content to anyone who should visit.
How did you get into woodworking.
Ironically, woodworking has been a part of my life since being a small child. My Father is an experienced joiner and has been working wood for over 40 years. Sadly I did not capitalise on trying to learn from him in my teenage years and only picked up woodworking in my late 20s. You can read more on how I accidentally started woodworking Here.
From there I wanted to develop my skills and so started to try my hand at different techniques and project types. As well as this, necessity (lack of funds) meant that I have had to approach a lot of things in a DIY manner rather than just buying new items outright and I am embracing every project as an opportunity to learn and to develop further.
Can I contact you?
Yes! Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, suggestions or tips you may have!
You can use the contact tab that should be visible at the top of your screen or please feel free to email me: email@example.com
I would welcome any input regarding the website, my projects and now my YouTube Channel.
Currently I am only able to dedicate a portion of my time to woodworking. I have a full time job and a growing family, both of which keeps me very busy. I will generate content as much as possible and hope that you enjoy the work that I do.
Thank you very much for visiting Shavings & Awl
